WIESBADEN– Approximately 270,000 people died in Germany in the 1stquarter of 2026, according to provisional figures of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The influence of respiratory illnesses (“influenza waves”), which are typical in winter, on mortality figures was relatively low during this period. Mortality figures were mostly close to, or significantly below, the median values of the four previous years. The most notable exception was an increase in mortality figures in mid-January (+7% and +8% in Weeks 2 and 3). For the individual months, the difference in relation to the respective median of the years 2022 to 2025 stood at +3% for January, +1% for February and -11% for March. Other indicators which theRobert Koch Institute(RKI) (only in German) publishes to assess this year’s flu wave are also at or below the level of the preceding seasons.
